Living on a Floating Home in Cat Ba island, Vietnam

Living off grid was something that we have always wanted to experience and this floating home in Cat Ba island was just the perfect place for it. From Hanoi we travelled to Ben Beo Harbour to Cat Ba Island by taking 3 ferries and 2 buses.

The floating homestay was located in the middle of sea. There was another home maybe at a distance of 5kms or so. We just had endless sea water and unique limestone mountains of Cat Ba that are similar to Halong Bay. The unique limestones mountains are formed over 500 million years and have unique significance in the geology. Halong Bay is extremely popular place however, is also bit crowded and commercial. Hence, we chose Cat Ba which is comparatively less commercial.

The Floating home that we chose was a simple homestay with 8 rooms, 2 common bathrooms, a common kitchen, and a common dining and lounging area. The homestay also provided some kayaks to explore the lagoons and beaches nearby. However, since the mountains are very similar looking and with zero internet connectivity, the way back can be confusing.

The homestay is a minimalist place where you just get your essentials and get to live simple life for few days. For the view and experience that this place provides, comparatively we had to pay a small fortune of INR 1300 per day for two people. Ideally this place can be utilised to comb through your thoughts and think about your life. I highly recommend this place.

One of the key question is, does a floating homestay actually float?

That’s how remote this floating homestay is
Kayaking here was such a pleasant experience
